Summer In The City Is Wow: Gaia’s Cultural District Announces Its August Line-up
This August, WOW invites everyone staying in the city to make the most of summer: with open-air sunsets, Portuguese food festivals, fado nights, and live music — all in one cultural district in Vila Nova de Gaia.
There’s a light energy in the air, a soundtrack that drifts through the afternoons, and an open invitation to those who choose to stay in the city during the height of summer. In August, WOW— Vila Nova de Gaia’s cultural district — transforms into a celebration under the open sky, where music, gastronomy, and culture meet the sunset and the carefree rhythm of the season.
This month’s big news is the expansion of the Sunsets to the central square. The new Sunsets na Praça will set the tone for two vibrant afternoons of music and dancing. On 15 and 24 August, from 3pm to 10pm, DJs Henri Josh, Artur, and Tiago Afonso — joined by MCs Cesariny and Henrique Mano — promise non-stop entertainment in an idyllic, free-entry space where dancing with a drink in hand and your eyes on the Porto skyline is encouraged.
Meanwhile, the classic Sunsets at VP continue to light up the evenings at WOW. On 23, 30, and 31 August, expect music, cocktails, and a breathtaking view over the Douro River and the city.
August also kicks off with big Portuguese flavours, as WOW brings back its popular food festivals. Following the success of the Francesinha Festival, it’s time for the Festival das Tasquinhas, taking place on 2 and 3 August — a celebration of traditional food, chilled wine, and the simple joy of sharing a meal. Two weeks later, on 16 and 17 August, the Festival do Fumeiro will highlight the rich aromas of Portuguese tradition with smoked sausages, cured meats, and other hearty delicacies. Both weekends will be fuelled by live traditional Portuguese music, in true celebration of local flavours.
August is also a time for fado. On 22 and 29 August, evenings take on a more intimate tone with Fado Show & Dinner — a soulful performance paired with a wine dinner where Portuguese song echoes between glasses of wine and heartfelt silences. Price: €55 per person.
And because the music doesn’t stop, the Angel’s Share bar will host live concerts every Friday and Saturday, featuring artists from across the musical spectrum. The month kicks off in style with international sounds: on 1 August, Cape Verdean artist Hilar brings morna and coladeira to the cultural district, and on 2 August, Angola’s Klaudio Hoshai offers a vibrant night of sembaand kizomba. The following weekends will bring further musical discoveries with artists like Rui David (Portuguese music) and Azula Queen (blues). Free entry.
